Wrong-Way Long Island Expressway Driver From Bellport Charged With DWI In Medford

A 911 caller reported a Jeep was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the LIE near exit 68 in Medford at 5:20 a.m. Sunday, March 13, Suffolk County Police said.

Highway Patrol Officers Aaron Parker and Jason Hubbard responded in two separate police vehicles, the SCPD said. 

"They encountered the Jeep between exits 66 and 65 where it pulled off the road and came to a stop at 5:30 a.m.," according to police.

The officers determined the driver of the Jeep, Erick Marin-Pelaez, of Bellport, was intoxicated and placed him under arrest, police said.

The Jeep, a 2014 model, was impounded.

Marin-Pelaez was charged with:

  • Driving while intoxicated, 
  • Unlawfully fleeing a police officer,
  • Reckless driving,
  • Numerous citations for traffic violations. 

He is being held at the Seventh Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip later in the day on Sunday.
